Fordell Weed May Be Mexican

According to a Wanganui botanist the plant which was exhibited at the monthly meeting of Wanganui Federated Farmers on Wednesday by Mr. H. R. Morgan (Fordell) is not new. It is Mexican poppy, arid was first recorded by Kirk in 1895, he says, and has been found in Taranaki. Hawke’s Bay, Marlborough and Rotorua. A member of the poppy family, it is not recorded as being poisonous. It. has a reputation of causing some damage to stock from its prickles. The Wanganui botanist states that it has not established itself in any particular area, and where it has appeared it has lived for a time and died out.

He stud'ed the plant in Mr. A. R. Donaldson’ office yesterday, and it was the fi ♦* specimen he had seen since he was in Rotorua in 1941.
