N.Z. Bowling Championships

SINGLES AND PAIRS SPEARMAN ELIMINATED FROM SINGLES (PA.) Dunedin, Jan. 18. There was much to hold the interest of the record gallery assembled on the St. Kilda green on Saturday, where the survivors in the singles competition in the New Zealand bowling championship tournament fought out the issue in some keenly contested games, and at the conclusion of the day only 10 players remained, all of them one lifers. The most notable performace of the day was the victory scored by J. A. Veitch, a Dunedin player, who deprived the former champion, C. G. Spearman, of his last chance in the singles and went on to take one life from J. F. Benson (Balmoral) in an exciting game. Play in the pairs competition was also brought to an advanced stage, six teams being left at the conclusion of the day, the only two lifers being the North East Valley pair, S. Dood and • E. H. Ravenwood, who will enter the eleventh round with an unbeaten record. FOURS START MONDAY. The fours competition is to commence on Monday. The final games in pairs and singles will now be held over until section play in the fours has been completed. It is expected that both finals will be played next Saturday. The 10 players left in the singles with one life each are: J. A. Veitch (Dunedin), J. F. Benson (Balmoral Auckland), J. H. Mingins (Onehunga), who have qualified for play in the twelfth round, M. Marsick (Ponsonby). S. Marriott (Opawa), C. H. Fraser (Beckenham), C. H. Kinzett (Waitai, Nelson), N. E. Jolly (St. Clair), qualifiers for the eleventh round and M. Pivac (Pukekohe) and G. Littlejohn (Lower Hutt), who have yet to play in the tenth round. J. H. Mingins (Onehunga), maintained his unbeaten record when he met the Te Aroha player, M. R. Buchan, in his first game of the day, but was beaten when he came up against his fellow Aucklander, J. F. Benson, in the ninth round. Benson has been one of the most consistent and attractive players in the competition, and he scored a surprisingly easy win over the Onehunga player. Two Lifers Meet. The only surviving two lifers Benson and Symons met in the tenth round, Benson winning comfortably by 17-11. Buchan was eliminated when he met a St. Clair player, N. E. Jolly, who maintained the good form he showed in the earlier rounds. C. E. Tyrrell (Mornington), former pairs champion, lost his first life in the eighth round when A. W. Ball gained a fairly comfortable win by 18-10. Ball established an early advantage and the game finished on the 18th. end. Meeting T. A. BarroW (Seatoun), a one-lifer, in the next game, Tyrrell began well, and. playing steadily, won 19-12, Ball dropped a life against O. H. Symons (Otaki railway) in the ninth game. Symons started off with a 4 and was not headed. Symons lost his final chance of survival when he met Mingins in the 11th. round. The Onehunga player was right on the job from the start Jolly and Tyrrell, both outstanding among the Dunedin singles survivors met in the tenth round, their game arousing considerable interest, although neither produced the bowls each had shown earlier in the competition. Jolly outdrew the Mornington man consistently, but the scores were level at 10 all when 14 ends had gone. Jolly forged ahead from the 16th. and won 17-14. Tyrrell being eliminated. Representatives of the Te Aroha elub have been prominent, in the singles and pairs play during the past week and one of the Waikato men who has impressed by consistently sound displays has been W. W. Weame, who was left with one life on entering the ninth round, but S. Marriott (Opawa). eliminated the Waikato man in the 10th round. * Wearne’s clubmate A. N. Callaghan had an unexpectedly easy win against E. R. Lynneberg (Khandallah), in the eighth round, both being one lifers. Callaghan established a lead after the first five ends and won by 21-10. A GOOD DISPLAY. The meeting between Spearman (Christchurch R.SA.) an A. N. Callaghan (Te Aroha) produced a close game and one of the best displays of bowls seen during the competition. Spearman, with his greater experience, played with a little more judgment than his opponent, but Callaghan showed his fighting qualities in a late run and the final score was 14-11 in favour of Spearman. J. A. Veitch established a commanding lead over Benson, the only two lifer remaining after 10 rounds, and after 13 ends the Dunedin man led by 19-9 The game ended in a win for Veitch by 21-19. Benson still being left with one life. N. W. McGorlick. who was the last Southland player left in the singles, was eliminated in the eighth round in which he went under to W. J. Chapman. a member of B. O. Priddis’ Christchurch R.S.A. team in the fours. Chapman went into the lead early and was not headed, winning 22-14. C. H. Kinzett (Maitai, Nelson), who has made steady progress throughout the singles competition, has been playing consistently good bowls, and by his 19-15 win over R. McNish (Canterbury) the Nelsonian won his way into the eleventh round. The six surviving pairs are: S Dodd and E. H. Ravenwood (North East Valley), who will enter the round with two lives, and the following one lifers: A. K. Hamilton and J. Middlesmass (Alexandra). N MacDonald and W. F. Hadwin (Lower Hutt), who will enter the 12th round, G. Littlejohn and A. J. Webster (Lower Hutt), J. B Kirkland and C. E. Tyrrel (Momington). and M. Marinovich and S. L.
