ARSENIC FOUND IN FLOUR
PEOPLE BECOME ILL AT MT. COOK HERMITAGE (P.A.) Timaru, Jan. 18. Arsenic was found in a sample of flour sent by the Health Department from The Hermitage to Government analysts in Christchurch for examination. The flour had been used in cooking a meal, after which 39 persons, including guests and staff, became ill last Tuesday. AU have now recovered. The police are making investigations, but Inspector D. L. Calwell said tonight that nothing definite had yet been ascertained. The district medical officer of health for South Canterbury (Dr. G. L. McLeod) said yesterday that the outbreak of sickness at The Hermitage last Tuesday had been definitely established by the Government analysts at Christchurch as being due to a poisonous substance, and not in any way related to disease processes, therefore there should be no cause now for anxiety on the part of the public regarding The Hermitage. “I would like to stress the fact that the matter was completely beyond the control of the management of The Hermitage." he added.
