MaeCallum, who had been in business in Taihape as a hardware merchant and had taken a part in town affairs for over a quarter of a century. Although Mr. MacCallum’s health had been uncertain during the past year, so much so that he had hail to take a less active part in business and affairs, his passing was entirely unexpected, and came as a great shock to a host of friends. On Thursday afternoon Mr. MacCallum drove his car down the south road on a business errand. Apparently when driving down the hi!’ above Winiata settlement he felt unwell and got out of the car, for Mr. S. I. McDonald, taxi proprietor, found the car parked on the left-hand side of the road, and Mr. MaeCallum lying on the left-hand side of th; roadway, in the grass between tne car and the edge of the bank. Particularly was this so in t'.ie investment and administration of the benevolent funds of the Patriotic Society as secretary over a long period, as a result of which it is still possible to assist necessitous cases 30 years after the funds were raised. The late Mr. MaeCallum had been a member and an officer of manyorganisations, apart from the Patriotic Society and Lawn Tennis Club. He was a foundation member of the Retailers' Association, of which he was president for two terms, a charter member of the Rotary Club, and a staunch member of the National Party.
