GENERAL NEWS

Pipe Band Concert The Wanganui Highland Pipe Band, under Pipe-Major E. C. Morgan and Drum-Major D. A. Almond, paraded at Durie Hill yesterday afternoon and presented a programme which was much appreciated by the residents of the suburb. Seaman Deserter It was reported by the Wanganui police last night that an English seaman, James Brennan, aged 23, had escaped from the Hamilton Police Station while undergoing detention. Five feet lOin. in height and fresh complexioned, Brennan deserted recently from the overseas liner Waipawa. Regatta Runs To Time. A feature of the Wanganui Rowing Association's Jury Cup regatta on Saturday was the fact that it was run fairly well to time. At two stages the races were about 15 minutes late in starting, but these delays were mad? up and the fixture finished almost on schedule. Much credit for this goes to the call stewards, Messrs. C. A. Healey and R. Boyfield, who chased competitors along. Were it not for a shortage of oars in all the clubs, the races would have been run even faster. Athletes Visit Wellington. Members of the Wanganui Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club visited Wellington on Saturday for an athletic meeting on the Basin Reserve. Adverse weather caused the programme to be curtailed drastically. S. McKenzie (Wanganui) who is the West Coast (N. 1. SBO yards champion, broke two minutes, an exceptional performance on the day, and his best to date. W. Hourlgan (Petone) had too much pace for the Wanganui sprinter, P. Henderson. Attempted Lamb Killing Record. Because of a two-hour breakdown in machinery a bid to establish a new record for a week's lamb killings was defeated at the New Zealand Refrigerating Co, Ltd., Imlay, on Friday. The week's total killings numbered about 35,000 —about 2000 less than the previous week. Appreciation of the work of the Imlay staff in reaching and maintaining the present high rate was expressed by the manager (Mr. H. E. Ziesler) when he announced the figures. “The men have been working very well indeed,” he added. Shearing Ending Wanganui and district woolgrowers will soon complete their shearing after a particularly good season. The favourable weather, which was in direct contrast to that experienced last season, enabled a good start to be made and maintained. Wanganui district growers have every reason to be satisfied with the prices lor wool this season. The next Wanganui sale next month will be a two-day fixture with an interval between the selling days. It is hoped this will obviate the difficulties which arose in the previous season as the result of unusually large catalogues which the wool stores were called on to handle.

Heavy Rainfall Satisfying to the farming community, but not welcomed by sports bodies, further heavy rain was experienced in Wanganui and district during the week-end. The rain cancelled tennis and cricket matches on Saturday, and some bowling fixtures. The final of the Wanganui Women’s ; Bowling Centre Championship was concluded in adverse weather, and on a heavy green on Saturday morning. The Wanganui Rowing Association carried on with its Jury Cup Regatta at Aramoho, the fixture being well attended by the public. A Wanganui athletic team travelled to Wellington on Saturday to take part in an athletic meeting in that centre, but wet weather was a detrimental factor.
