JURY CUP RETAINED BY ARAMOHO IN INTERCLUB ROWING REGATTA

The Aramoho Boating Club successfully retained the Jury Cup at the Wanganui Rowing Association’s Regatta over tire Aramoho course on Saturday afternoon. Aramoho scored 23 points. Union 19. and Wanganui six points. Honours were fairly even between Union and Aramoho right through and with one race to go, the senior eights, Aramoho had a lead of two points over Union. Union, had it won the eight-oar event, would hare won the Jury Cup by a margin of one point. However, Aramoho won the event comfortably to retain the t rophy. In the senior single sculls, J. Schneider (Aramoho) was hard pressed by N. Crabbe (Union) to win by three-quarters of a length. The senior fours was a complete victory for Aramoho, who filled first and second places, The eight-oar race saw Unicn, whose crew has had only three tows together, set the pace and lead tor more than half the distance. Aramoho then clapped on the pace, oveihauled Union, and forged ahead to win comfortably by three-quarters of a length. Officials were controlled the fixture were: Starter, Mr. P. Benefield; judges, Messrs. L. Sheppard and J. Ross; umpires, Messrs. H. Dalzell, F. Wilson, F. Laird, and R. Coxon; call stewards, Messrs. C. A. Healey and R. Boyland. Results were as follow: Maiden Fours. Wanganui (M. Byers, J. Bennett, RWhite, D. Ross) 1; Aramoho No. 3 (D. Holmes, J. Hargreaves, G. Simonson, R. Tasker) 2; Union No. 2 (I. Whale, K. Patterson, R. Burns, B. Dunstone) 3. Wanganui secured an early lead-with the rest of the field bunched well together. Wanganui had a lead of a length at Webb's shed. Aramoho challenged strongly but Wanganui was able to maintain this lead. A canvas separated second and third. Maiden Single Sculls. M. Brown-Sharpe (Union) 1; H. Clarke (Wanganui) 2; C. Marchant (Union) 3. Brown-Sharpe went to the front at the gun and slowly forged ahead. He was never challenged and won easily by 12 lengths. Marchant got away to a good start but dropped back and Clarke was well ahead for ' second honours. Novice Fours. Union No. 1 (R. Malpass, P. O’Con nor, M. Pettis, P. Sloan) 1; Aramoho (M. Lawrence, G. Campbell, G. Jones, Officials who controlled the fixture Morrison, J. Edwards, D. Clapcott) 3. Aramoho had a slight lead at Webb’s .shed but Union then went to the front. Union increased its lead to a length and had this amount in hand at the finish. There was threequarters of a length between second and third. Senior Single Sculls. J. Schneider (Aramoho) 1; N. Crabbe (Union) 2; W. Taylor (Union) 3. Schneider led the whole way but over the last 200 yards he was strongly challenged by Crabbe, who came to light with a strong sprint. Schneider won with a margin of . threequarters of a length. Taylor was well back. Youths’ Fours (Under 21). Aramoho (D. Morrison, W. Carroll, 'R. Kendrick, H. Springer) 1; Union No. 1 (L. Creswell, I. Collings, R. Payne, J. White )2; Union No. 2 (A. Pauli,'D. Lind, D. Martin, B. Sargent) 3. This race was a great tussle at the finish’between Union and Aramoho. Both crews were level at Webb's but Aramoho got its bows ahead and in a great finish won by a short canvas. There was a length between second and third. Maiden Fours (Under lost.). Union (D. Talbot, C. Small, D. Boswell, A. Tong) 1; Aramoho No. 1 (D. Holmes, J. Hargreaves, C. Simonson, R. Tasker) 2; Aramoho No. 2 (R. Glenn, P. Barnsley, S. Jermy, C. uwen) 3. Aramoho, on the outside, rowed a better length and had the lead approaching the finish. Union then picked up and forged ahead to win by a length. The second Aramoho crew was well back. Senior Fours. Aramoho (E. Johnson, T. Preator, L. Clarke, J. O’Brien) 1; Aramoho No. 2 (J. Schneider, D. Simonson, J. Brown, J. Fothergill) 2; Union No. 1 (R. Butters,' J. Buller, H. Benge, R. Crombie) 3. Aramoho soon went to the lead and at Brunswick Road was a length in front. The rest of the crews were fairly well together. Over the last 400 yards Aramoho No. I forged ahead and Aramoho No. 2 began to leave the rest of the field. Aramoho won by a margin of three lengths but there was a tussle for second place, Aramoho No. 2 winning by a canvas. Junior Fours. Union No. 3 (1.. Cresswell, I. Collings, R. Payne, J. White) 1; Union No, 1 (J. Wilson, L. Hill, W. Ward, P. Wiwi) 2, Wanganui (V. Hatrick, G. Austin, M. R. Grace, R. Robinson) 3. The Union No. 3 crew rowed close to the Wanganui East bank and ran away from the rest of the field over the final stages to win by two and a-half lengths. The second Union crew stopped before the gun and drifted over the line. Wanganui was a length behind in third place. Aramoho stopped shortly before the fin ish. Maiden Pairs. Aromoho (R. Kendrick and H. Springer) 1; Wanganui (B. Byers and J. Bennett) 2; Union (J. Wilson and C. DrummoruU 3. Aramoho had a commanding lead early in the race and won by three lengths. Union was half a length behind Wanganui after a strenuous fight for second place. At this stage, Aramoho had 1G points, Union 15, and Wanganui six. Youths' Fours (Under 18). Aramoho (O. Weenick, W. Horne, P. Anderson, K. Martin) 1; Wanganui (B. Ingram, D. Morrison, D. Ross, W. Davis) 2; Union No. 1 (C. Austin, B. Reid, D. Rennie, Edwards) 3. This race was a great struggle between Aramoho and Wanganui. Wanganui left its sprint too late and, coming up fast, was beaten by three feet. Union was three lengths behind Wanganui. This gave Aramoho a total of 19 points, to Union’s 15 and Wanganui’s six. Welterweight Juniors. Union (J. Price, S. Rolls, R. Smith. J. Wood) 1; Aramoho No. 1 (J. Davidson, W. Davidson. T. Tuffin. A. Johnstone) 2. In a hard fought finish. Union won by a length. The Union

No. 2 crew stopped before reaching the finish but drifted across the line for third place. The scores for the Jury Cup were now Aramoho 20 and Union 18, with one race to go—the senior eights. Granville, A. Tonks, R. Crombie) 2. Aramoho got away to a canvas lead from the start but Union forged ahead to take Ihe lead by a canvas. This lead Union held until near Brunswick Road, where Aramoho came up. Aramoho put on the weight and slowly forged ahead and, in a fine sprint, crossed the finish threequarters of a length ahead of Union. Wanganui was never in the picture, but its effort in boating a crew was very sporting. The Wanganui Rowing Association's annual regatta will be held on the same course on Saturday, January 31.
