TRIBUTE TO BRAVERY OF A FATHER

MAN WHO WENT TO RESCUE OF DAUGHTER AND WAS LOST (P.A.) Wellington, Jan. 13 A tribute to the courage of Dr. A. R. F. Mac Kay, who was drowned after rescuing his daughter, Valerie Mac Kay, from the surf at Raumati South on Sunday, was paid today by a former Australian surf lifesaver who took part in the rescue. The man, who chose to remain a: onymous, said: "Dr Mac Kay was a very brave man. He made no attempt to save himself, but tried to ijold his daughter out of the water." He said he was dressed at the time and sitting on the beach when he saw Valerie Mac Kay apparently in difficulties a long way out in the water. By the time he reached the girl, Dr. Mac Kay, who was obviously tiring, was supporting her. The girl had her arms round her father’s neck, and each time wave swept over them Dr. Mac Kay went under attempting to hold her up. The man said he took Valerie MacKay and returned towards the beach with her. At the time there was a very heavy undertow, and it took ten minutes to reach the beach. As the man went out to help the girl's father, Dr. Mac Kay had disappeared from view. The man himself was then tiring, and he turned back towards the beach, which he reached in an exhausted condition. Ti e search for Dr. Mac Kay’s body continued today without success. It is believed the body was carried out to sea and may not be brought ashore for some time,
