WILL RUSSIA BREAK WITH THE WEST IN CONTROL OF GERMANY?
Recd. 6.35 p.m. London, Jan. 14. German reports that Marshal Sokolovsky left Berlin for Moscow immediately after last week’s Frankfurt decisions became known are not denied by the Russians, says “The Times' ” Berlin correspondent, and the assumption is that the Marshall has gone to receive his brief for next week’s meeting of the Allied Control Council, which is certain to be crucial. The unmitigated fierceness of the Russian criticism of the new Western plan has even led some observers to believe that Marshal Sokolovsky will return with an announcement of a complete breach between the East and West, but “The Times’ ” correspondent says such an explanation perhaps over-simplifies the situation. Russian interests, he points out, will not be served by a parting at this stage. Moscow still highly values its links with western Germany and western Europe, and not cynicism, but rather sound sense, suggests that the situation, from Moscow’s viewpoint, is not yet ripe for decisive action.
