LOW TEMPERATURE IN SYDNEY
HEAVY RAINS, FLOODING Recd. 7.40 p.m. Sydney, Jan. 14 The mid-day temperature in Sydney today of 58 degrees was the lowest January reading ever recorded by the weather bureau. Heavy rain drenched the city all day and there were interruptions to electricity supply. Flooding is threatened on the south coast and in Queensland. Weather experts predict the possibility that the weather cycle will continue until August, precipitating floods on a record scale. A wellknown weather forecaster, Inigo Jones, who predicted the present wet spell, says there will be a dry period followed by more rain about January 20. Nine years ago today Sydney had its all-time record hottest day of 113.6 degrees. Continued rain has already cost New South Wales up to 30,000,000 bushels of wheat, worth at least £lB,000,000. Snow is falling in the Australian Alps and at Mount Kosciusko guests were able to eki yesterday. In Queensland a tornado storm struck the waterfront in two Brisbane suburbs, uprooting trees, smashing windows arid ripping iron from roofs. Three children and a woman were injured.
