AUSTRALIANS PURCHASE 19 LOTS IN ALL (P.A.) Wellington, Jan. 14.
Values declined on the opening day of the 22nd National sale of thoroughbred yearlings at Trentham to-day. Of the 120 lots offered 71 were sol'd for an aggregate of 32,8271gn5., giving an average of 426gns. On the first day of last year’s sale 90 lots were disposed of for an average of 710gns Top price to-day was 1600gns., which Mr. W. R. Kemball, Melbourne, paid for the grey colt by Nizami from Lady Rosette, offered on account of Miss H. M. Westenra, Dunsandel Mr. Kemball bought five other colts, paying in all 5609gns. towards the aggregate of 12,240gn5. wiiich Australian buyers gave for the 19 lots they purchased.
Top price for fillies was 1200gns„ which Mr. T. C. Lowry, Okawa, gave for the half-sister by Ruthless to Taulocb, offered on account of the Santa Rosa Stud. Four lots from the Alton LodgeStud sold for 2800gns., an average of 700gns. Two of these, the colt by Gold Nib from Cairness. bought by the Takanini trainer F. Smith for a patron, and the filly by Gold Nib from Miss Viven, bought by Mr. Kernball, realised lOOOgns. each Aggregates for other leading studs which sold to-day were down considerably on last year. While there were several attractive yearlings offered to-day, the catalogue did not contain the star lots of the sale.
