YAWL ARRIVES FROM SYDNEY TO COMPETE IN TRANS-TASMAN RACE

(P.A.) Auckland, Jan. 12. After a voyage of 17 days from Sydney, the 40ft yawl Wayfarer, flagship of the Cruiser Yacht Club of Australia, owned and skippered by Mr. P. M. Luke, arrived at Russell, Bay of Islands, at 11 o’clock this morning. Features of the voyage were moderate weather and a strong wind from a south easterly direction. Wayfarer is one of several Australian yachts which have entered the Auckland to Sydney race which is to start o n January 24. She left Sydney on Boxing Day with 28 competitors in the Sydney to Hobart race, later parting with th e racing fleet. Two of the competitors in the later event a 36ft cutter Peer Gynt and the ketch Kurrewa 111, are also expected at Auckland in the near future to take part in the race to Sydney. No other craft was seen by Wayfarer after she left the racing fleet. She took 41 days to reach Lord Howe Island, where the crew spent five days. The voyage to Russell took seven days. A heavy ground swell was experienced on the last three days. Wayfarer will leave Russell tomorrow morning for Auckland where she is expected on Thursday. The crew are Messrs Luke, B. Beckett, J. Doyle, N. Carson and M. Slater. Messrs Beckett, Doyle and Garson are former members of the R.A-A.F. Fourteen yachts have entered the Trans-Tasman race, which has been sponsored by the Royal Akarana Yacht Club. Ketches, schooners, cutters and yawls are included. ’lt is probable, however, that not all will start.
