WOMAN TRIED TO HITCH HIKE WITH FIRE ENGINE

(P.A.) Wellington, Dec. 26. A noved form of attempted “hitchhiking” is reported. On its way to answer a call to Adelaide Road, an engine from the Wellington Central Fire Station was stopped on Christfas Eve by a young woman who was standing at the side nf the road waving frantically. The firemen were a little startled by a request for a lift to Island Bay and this, of course—to the obvious annoyance and disappointment of the young woman they refused. They went, on to the fire which, however, turned out to be a false alarm.
