MASON BEE GRUB CUT OFF NORTH ISLAND POWER
(P.A.) Napier, Nov. 27. A tiny grub was responsible for throwing tne lower half of the North Island into darkness on Monday night last, it was revealed by the State Hydro-Electric Department officials at Napier to-day.
An official who just returned from a visit to the hydro-electric station at TuU reported that the power -black-out had been traced to a mason bee gruh which had lodged across two terminals on the cut-out panel at Tuai station. Investigation showed that a clay nest of a mason bee at the rear of the panel had come apart allowing a grub to fall through a narrow slot directly below and on to two power terminals. It was then that a large part of the North Island found itself without power. The load was transferred to Mangahao station, which was unable to cope with the demand, causing a second break in the power supply.
