IS WANGANUI BEING SIDE-TRACKED?

VISIT OF LADY BADEN-POWELL The view that Wanganui is being side-tracked when distinguished overseas visitors are making tours of the Dominion was expressed at the monthly meeting of the Wanganui Girls’ College Board of Governors yesterday. The subject was introduced when the itinerary of Lady Baden-Powell, Chief Guide, was read. This stated that on Tuesday, February 10, she would be in Wanganui from 1 p.m. to 1.40 p.m. only. Accompanying the itinerary, which was received from the Education Department, was a request that, the board approve time oft from school of Girl Guides and Brownies for the occasion. Mr. J. C. Batt said the time scheduled for Lady Baden-Powell in the city was very short, and indeed it looked as if Wanganui was being side-tracked. The itinerary provided for a stay overnight at New Plymouth, with plenty of time for the visitor making a good tour of that town. Wanganui enjoyed a city status and it was only lair that the attention of the authorities should be drawn to the matter so that Lady Baden-Powell would have more time in Wanganui. The secretary (Mr. G. N. Boulton) said from Wanganui the visitor would proceed to Palmerston North, where the itinerary provided for a stay of about 24 hours. Mrs. E. M. Scott said strong representations should be made to see that Wanganui was not slighted in a similar manner on future occasions. Mr. I. W. Mtidford (Foxton) said Wanganui had a just claim in the protest about the short period Lady Baden-Powell was due to stay in Wanganui. Il was not. the visitor's fault; it was the fault of those who had drawfrMp. the itinerary. After J.cJjlhg the case of Viscount Montgomery, and the short dural ion of his visit to Wanganui, Mr. Baft moved that the City Council be written to and asked to make representations irb the right quarter. This was agreed to. The board gave its approval for the request that Guides and Brownies attend the reception to Lady Baden-Powell. f
