Four Families Hold China In Thrall
“The worst. Chinese Government of modern times’’ is how the present administration is described by Professor Nathaniel Peffer, of Columbia University, the American expert on China. This article by the son of the Kuomintang’s first Foreign Minister gives an inside view of the narrow oligarchy which for the past 20 years has controlled the Government, the State machine, and . the Kuomintang Party. These four families, he reveals, control a personal army of 250000 men; direct finances, Press, industry, and trade; control 90 per cent, of all bank deposits, 75 per cent, of all holdings in gold and foreign currency, and 70 per cent, of the merchant marine; and possess a combined wealth estimated at more than £5,000,000,000.
