TONNAGE OF CARGO HANDLED BY WANGANUI WATERSIDERS
(0.c.) Parliament Bldgs., Nov. 26 Total tonnage of all classes of cargo hand/jd by Wanganui watersiders for last year was 88,936, states the annual report of the Water front Commission for the year ended March 31. 1947, and since the inception of the cooperative contract system in 1941 the total cargo handled was 441,189 tons. The number of contracts last year was 207, and for the period 1941-4 G the number was 888. Man-weeks worked by the watersiders totalled 3398, or 116,185 hours (including 27,465 hours’ overtime), with an average of 34 hours per week worked by each man.
The total union membership in Wanganui is given as 78, but in the abstract of wages 85 men are shown as having earned £30.417 during the I year. Eight men earned under £lOO, five between £lOO and £2OO. eight between £2OO and £3OO, nineteen between £3OO and £4OO, and 45 between £4OO and £5OO.
Refusal to work overtime as a protest against the decision of the Commission on attendance money and the guaranteed wage resulted in the loss of 3103 man-hours’ working time.
