ST. JOHN’S ANGLICAN CHURCH DIAMOND JUBILEE

The Diamond Jubilee celebration of St John's (Anglican! Church in Liverpool Street, was held last weekend when a large number of people attended noth the concert bn Saturday evening and the service on Sunday morning. St. John’s was the first of‘the daughter churches in the parish of Christ Church, having been opened in 1887. Messages of congratulation wore received from former clergy, who had served the Church, among whom were Canon Hamilton and the Reverends C. R. Kreeft, C. L. Dobbs and B. M. Tavlor. Messrs. C. R. White, E. Lind an J O. D. Bell conducted the service, and the Vicar of Wanganui, the Rev. J. R. L. Higgs, preached the sermon.

Mr. White gave a most interesting resume of the work, activity and progress of the church down the years, referring feelingly to the many faithful stalwards who had assisted and guided the destinies of the church. His reminiscences were happily recalled by many of those present.

Mr. Higgs also dealt with the work of St. John's which, be said, could claim the honour of being the senior sister church of the parish. The vicar read several letters of congratulation from various ministers who had previously served at St. John's, all of whom recalled with satisfaction the affection they still held for that church and its people. Special mention was made of the Sunday school, the loyal and devoted workers associated with it, and its undoubted influence for good.
