LINCOLN NOMINEE AS RHODES SCHOLAR
(P.A.) Christchurch, Oct. 13. Canterbury Agricultural College. Lincoln, has nominated this year the president of Students’ Association, Mr. R. H. Thornton. B.Agr. Sc., for a Rhodes’ Scholarship. Educated at Wellington College, where he was a prefect, swimming champion and hockey player, Thornton then commenced his university career at Victoria University College in 1943. He completed his agricultural intermediate examination in that year and then followed his course at Lincoln College and he graduated in TS46 at Lincoln. He has held in turn the offices of secretary and president of the students’ association and delegate to the New Zealand University Students' Association. He has on three occasions been a member of his college Joynt Scroll debating team ana was placed second in 1945. Should he be awarded a Rhodes Scholarship, he hope s to work at Oxford with Sir Howard Florey’s team of research workers and to study the features of microbial antagonisms and inter-relationships.
