BRITISH ARMED FORCES

RATE OF DISCHARGE OF MEN ACCELERATED London, Oct. 13. The Ministry of Labour lifts announced an accelerated programme of releases from the British Forces. Under the new programme the releases during th'' last quarter of 1947 will exceed the totals given in the Government’s last estimate by 27,000. The total number to be released in the first quarter of 1948 will be 229,490. The Government’s aim is th?.t all men who were serving on December 31, 1946, except volunteers serving lor fixed periods, will be released before the end of 1948. The Government hopes to maintain the principle of releasing members of the forces serving overseas at the same time as those on home service in the same age and service groups. The statement sa ys this will mean very heavy demands on shipping.
