WANGANUI BASKETBALL

WANGANUI SEASON ENDS SEVERAL VISITING TEAMS The 1947 season concluded on Saturday last, when visiting teams from Levin, Ashhurst, Feilding, Otaki, Hawera, Eltham, and New Plymouth visited Wanganui and played against local teams. Some interesting and closely-contested games were witnessed and play was of a high standard. In the senior grade Technical Old Girls had a comfortable win over United, New Plymouth, 36—13; Nga Toa were defeated by Eltham by one goal; and St. Mary’s went down to Hawera Technical Old Girls. The final of the senior grade championship was played between Nga Toa and Technical Old Girls, resulting in a draw, 20 all, which gives Nga Toa the senior championship for the second year in succession, Technical Old Girls being two points behind. The game started off at a fast pace and never slackened throughout, despite the \varm temperature, which made palying conditions very exhausting. Scoring was even in the first spell and neither side was able Io establish a lead. The half-time score was 8 to 7 in Technical Old Girls’ favour. In the second spell Nga Toa played one short as S. 4-lawke who had been playing defence, suffered an ankle injury. The team elected to play short in th. centre third and S. Ralph and B. Hughes put up admirable opposition against the three Technical centres. J. McFarland was playing an excellent game in the field in Tech’s forward third, while E. Couchman showed up well in defence. E. Glasgow and D. Bosher in Nga Toa's forward third were in good form, combining well and shooting accurately. Again scores kept even, and time was called with the score at 20 all. The referee was Mr. C. J. Haherfield. The teams were: Nga Tua.- E. Glasgow leapt.), D. Bosher, R. Sunderland, B. Hughes, J. Ralph, J. Canty, S. Hawke, I. Spooner. J. Smith. Technical Old Girls.—J. McFarland (rapt.). L. Breed, N. Couchman, P. Phillips. N. Webby, K. Gedye, P. Bailey, B. Forward. E. Couchman. Trophies won during the season will be presented at a dance to be held in St. Joseph's Hall on Thursday of this
