Motorists Fined For Parking Too Long In City’s Main Streets
A check carried out by Wanganui City Council traffic inspectors on cars parked in the main streets for longer than the 15 minutes which is permitted resuitedZn several motorists being charged in the Magistrate’s Court, Wanganui, yesterday. Imposing penalties which ranged from 25s to £2, Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., said he was bound to base these fines on the time a car was left unattended in a city street and the particular locality in which it was parked. “Here we have a car left for two and three-quarter hours in Victoria Avenue, between Maria Place and Ridgway Street,” said the magistrate, imposing a fine of £2. “It is probably one of the busiest thoroughfares in Wanganui,” Inspector H. E. Tipper prosecuted for the City Council, and evidence was given by Inspector E. Hamling and J. H. Minnell. Defendants, with fines imposed, and costs, were: Mary Armour, fined 255, costs 12s; Ivan Brown, fined 30s, costs 10s; Brian Connell, fined 30s, costs 10s; Hugh Royston Callender, fined 355, costs 10s; Evelyn Colyton Harvey (Mr. C. P. Brown), fined £2, costs 10s; Alfred Frederick Newrick, fined 30s, costs, 10s; Bryan Cranstone Scott, fined £2, costs 10s; Albert Hansen, fined 30s; costs 12s; Noel Duncan McColl, fined 355, costs-10s; Clive Raymond Nettleton, fined 355, costs 10s. Kathleen Baddeley was fined 15s, costs 12s, for parking over a fire plug in Taupo Quay for 30 minutes. The checks were carried out on Wednesday and Friday afternoons, most of the offences being committed on Wednesday, September 10, described as a busy day in the city.
