Soldier Who Deserted Five Years Ago Sent to Prison
(P.A.) Auckland, Oct. 6 Having pleaded guilty to a charge of desertion from the First Battalion of the Hauraki Regiment five years ago, Private Colin Aubrey Richards aged 26, was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment with hard labour by the district court-martial at Papakura Military Camp. Pay amounting to nearly 17 was stopped to cover the cost of equipment and regimental necessaries which he also admitted he lost. . , Private Thomas Anderson, of the J Force Relief Draft, who was charged with deserting between June 30 and September 22, last, was found not guilty. On a lesser charge of absence without leave he was found fuilty and was sentenced to 28 days’ etention. Pay amounting to 116 was stopped to cover the cost of kit deficiencies.
