NEW WINNING RECORD FOR 100-MILE CYCLE ROAD RACE
(P.A.) Christchurch, Oct. 4. In winning the Timaru to Christchurch 100-mile professional road cycling championship yesterday, G. Stack established a new winning record of 4 hrs 43 min. 9 sec. The previous fastest winning time was 5 hrs. 4 min. recorded by H. B. Chamberlain (Waimate) last year. In filling second place the veteran rider, L. H. Arnst, whose time was 4 hrs. 45 min., rode the fastest race of his career over the journey. He is 47 and has been in the game 28 years. A. King, a West Coaster, filled third place. Probably the most spectacular performance was that of G. Wade (Auckland), who took the fastest time of 4 hrs. 24 min. 50 sec. He is the third rider to have broken 5 hrs. in taking the championship and his time was just over 7 min. outside the record of 4 hrs. 17 min., established by D. A. Swanston in 1945.
For the second year in succession, L. Hubbard took the junior championship. He rode off 11 min. and the merit of hi« effort is amply illustrated by the fact that his time was less than 4 min. outside that of Wade.
