FATAL FALL DOWN SHAFT OF MINE

(P.A.) Auckland, Oct. 6. Falling 250 feet down a shaft of the Martha goldmine while apparently waiting for the cage, a mine surveyor was killed 1000 ft. below ground this morning. He was William Roy Carnachan, aged 49, married, of Waihi. Shortly before 10 o’clock, Carnachan was working alone on No. 7 level of the mine, 700 ft. from the surface. He rang for the cage, but when the operator reached the level he found no one waiting and resumed his duties. When he returned 20 minutes later, the level was still deserted. A search was made and Carnachan’s body was found at the foot of the cage shaft. Carnachan, who is survived by his wife and five children, had been employed as surveyor or assistant surveyor in the Martha mine fol about 10 years.
