NEW U.S. APPROACH TO BALKANS PROBLEM
(N.Z.P. A.—Reuter—Copyright.) New York, Oct. 4. Thp United States told the Political Security Committee that it would consider abandoning its move to have the General Assembly directly blame Albania and Yugoslavia for the strife in Greece provided the three Balkan satellites would agree to the appointment of a long-term United Nations Commission to patrol the Greek border. Mr. Herschel Johnson, in indicating this new United States approach to the Balkan problem, said that Mr. Lange’s statement in support of Poland’s proposal that the Balkans should be allowed to settle their differences in private was nothing but a collection of platitudes. Mr. Lange, earlier in the meeting, oranded the United States as the instigator of the trouble in ‘Greece. He charged that American officials had dictated the size of the Greek army and the make-up of the Athens Government. Mr. Lange declared that the Western powers charges of Communist interference in Greek affairs were an anti-climax when compared to the way the United States and Britain “tampered” with Greek freedom.
