"LOVELIEST VILLAGE" FOR SALE
Castle Combe, Wiltshire, often described as England’s loveliest village, is to be sold. Sheltering only 300 inhabitants, the village is unique in that no .new house has been built there for 300 years, that no advertisements are allowed to mar its beauty, and that unsightly petrol pumps and telephone kiosks are tucked away behind walls. Present owner of Castle Combe, with its manor house, two inns, three shops and ancient Market Cross, is Mrs. E. C. Maurice, in whose family the village has been for 100 years. Upkeep of the estate, involving thousands of pounds, has forced her to sell, and she hopes to find a single buyer so that Castle Combe will remain its unspoiled self. Failing this the estate must be auctioned. Villagers’ homes in Castle Combe are not endangered. All are protected by Statute and cannot be turned out. Picture shows: A view of sunlit Castle Combe. The ancient Market Cross in the background is the focal point of this charming village, virtually unchanged since Stuart times.
