Works Department is Investigating Storm Damage in Rangitikei
(S.R.) Marton, Oct. 2. An investigation is being carried out by the Works Department into severe storm damage which occurred at the northern end of the Rangitikei County three months ago. When the inquiries are completed the question of subsidising the county for the cost of repairs will be considered. This was indicated by Mr. P. Kearlns M.P. for Walmarino, in a letter received by the council at its monthly meeting today. Mr. Kearin's letter was in reply to inquiries made by the council regarding a deputation waiting on the Minister of Works (Mr. Semple) in Wellington and putting the facts before him. . The estimated cost of repairing storm damage in the county this year exceeds £lO,OOO. Most of it is in the back country at. the northern end of the county. Slips and washouts blocked many roads during the severe southerly storm which occurred in mid-February and repair work was hardly completed before another severe storm occurred at the end of June.
Though most back-country roads are open to traffic, tlie county engineer, Mr. 11. Murray Reid stated that a tremendous amount of work was necessary before they were all restored to order.
