SOCIAL and personal. Mrs. J. C. Batt has returned to Wanganui from Napier. Mrs. J. K. Scoullar, College Street, left yesterday for a brief v.slt to Wellington. Mr. S. G. Holland, Christchurch leader of the National Party, and Mrs. Holland, will be spending the week-end at, Marton as the guests of Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Gordon, “Braemore" for the McElwen—Gordon wedding, which takes place today.
Mrs. Belmont Bates (Dominion president of the Nat.onal Council of Women), Mrs. E. J. Chesswas (Dominion secretary), Mrs. A. E. Gould (Dominion treasurer) and Mrs. A. H. Mac Lean (branch president), leave Wanganui early in the week for Wellington to attend an executive meeting of the N.C.W. Lady Addison, wife of the Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations, who. with her husband, is visiting the Dominion was for many years a treelance journalist in Fleet Street, London, graduating from an advertising agency, where she was engaged when she first went to work. She was born in London in 1896, and has lived in the city or its outskirts all her life. Her father was F. Percy Low, one of the pioneers of cycling, an early member and for many years president of the National Cyclists’ Union, and a cycling journalist of some note. Lady Adaison is interested in the history of London, of which she has acquired considerable knowledge, but is now mainly concerned with rations, and queues, for she does her own cooking and housekeeping.
Bale Of Work At St. Paul’s Hall. A sale of work which should attract a crowd of v.sitors is that to be held this afternon by members of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church Choir in aid of Chinese Missionary Funds. There will be an excellent array of sewing, including a variety of aprons, showers, breakfast and supper cloths, novelt.es, home-made sweets and cakes, produce, woodwork, “white elephant ’ and other goods. A "mock court" and Punch and Judy Show will provide entertainment. Held in St. Paul’s Hall, the sale will be opened at 2 p.m. by the Rev. A. C. McLean. Tnere will be afternoon tea.
Porinia Hospital Appeal. The Mayoress w.shes to remind sympathisers of the Porirua Appeal that the closing date for sending in Christmas gifts for women patients is October 20. Such gifts as sweets and biscuits in sealed tins, materials and embroidery cottons, for fancy work, wool for knitting, magazines, and discarded evening frocks, which patients appreciate for dress-up parties, will be most acceptable. There is also a monetary appeal which goes to provide out.ngs tor patients who have no relatives. This appeal closes at the end of November.
Wool Sold at Public Auction. An auction sale of knitting wool held in Wellington on Wednesday, attracted keen interest. It was claimed that £2OOO worth if wool, some of it which showed a faulty dye , was on sale. As well as a large number of women bargain hunters there was also a good representation of the sterner sex. Pound notes were offered from all parts of the room for the 16 skeins involved in each transaction concerning navy blue wool. The Price Tribunal had fixed prices for the various lots. In one lot £3OO worth was disposed of in a tew moments. Buyers present on behalf of wholesale rirms bought up the larger lots.
