CARD AT HASTINGS

HAWKE’S BAY FIELDS AND PROSPECTS With fourteen engaged in the Hawke's Bay Guineas, the classic event at Hastings this afternoon is invested with more than the usual amount of interest, especially as the field includes t Dunkerron, winner of the Wanganui’ Guineas, and Distinction, Liebestraum and Thimble, win-’ ners last Saturday. It is to this quartet that the public will probably look for the ultimate winner.. Without detracting from the merit of Dunkerron’s win in the Wanganui Guineas, it may be stated that Distinction appeared to be the unlucky runner in that classic. His win last Saturday Was* Achieved in fin e style, and he should again beat Sweet Nymph, who finished within a head of him. Liebestraum impressed when he won at Carterton and again at Hastings last Saturday, and he should be the hardest horse for Distinction to beat. Thimble won a maiden race at Otaki and may develop into a very useful three-year-old. If the winner comes from outside those discussed it will be a classic surprise. The principal handicap event in the H. A. Russell Memorial, for which there is a useful field, headed by last year's New Zealand Cup winner, Catteriek Bridge. First-day form suggests that Ramicourt, who finished second to Royal Victor in 'the Lowry Memorial, should‘be able to account for the opposition. Sparkling Lady and Welcome Guest appear to have the best chances against him. If Findon is anywhere near his best form —he won at Riccarton in August —he would be given a great chance in the Stewards’ Handicap. Stony Broke was a trifle unlucky last Saturday, and Omit, if started here in preference to Otaki, could also be expected to play a prominent part. Good fields are engaged in the other events, and the following may be fancied : Tomoana Hack Hurdles. Paganini, Danny’s Gift, Te Akl. Otane Hack Handicap. Vakura, Comedy Star, Yalta. Juvenile Handicap. Rokdale, Hinepai,l Burnished Ring. Russell Memorial. Ramicourt, Sparkling Lady, Welcome Guest. Trial Handicap. Brantford, Clive Bay, Bainbridge. Hawke’s Bay Guineas. - Distinction, Liebestraum, Dunkerron. Stewards' Handicap. Stony Broke, Findon. Trig Point. Final Hack Handicap. The Denbigh, Tuki Ngapo, Night School. The acceptors are:—
