OPENING OF BOWLING SEASON MAIN SPORTING ATTRACTION TOMORROW

Main sporting event in Marton tomorrow will be the official opening of the Marton bowling season. This is the second summer sporting organisation to declare the new season open, the Matanui Tennis Club paving the way last week with its ceremony It is not expected that the cricket competition will begin before Saturday November 1. Meanwhile clubs are arranging net practice in the evenings. Tne wickets at the cricket ground at present require plenty of attention, but, given favourable weather they should be in order- by the beginning of next month. Clubs are also making arrangements for the “working bee” to be held on the ground on Saturday October 18. '

Winter activities, however, are not yet concluded and golf will probably be played until towards the end of next month. On Marton Park tomorrow, a novelty hockey match has been arranged between the Athletic women's team and an eleven picked from the Marton Old Boys’ Football Club. The match is timed for 1,45 p.m.

The Athletic team has shown great improvement over the past six vveefis and should give the men a hard game. The Athletic team is: B. Kinloch S. Duncan, J. Childs, J. Blunden, H Nitschke, P. Goebel, S, Thompson, J. Kinloch, I. Futcher, D. Morrison and E. Angus.

BAND AT BOWLING OPENING. It favoured with good weather tomorrow the official opening oi the Marton Bowling Club will be an enjoyable outing tor the many visitors, who are expected to be present.

Tne Marion Brass Band will be in attendance to render select.ons during the afternoon and a group photqgrapn will be taken after the president, Mr. G. H. Denbow, has declared the season open. Silver buttons won last year will be presented and a past-presi-dent's badge will be presented to Mr. O. Brabyn. The club will also honour life members on this occasion.

When these formalities have concluded, members will enjoy a roll up, wane afternoon tea is being dispensed. Members are reminded to bring a basket. If the weather is adverse, an appropriate ceremony will take place m the club's pavilion. Five members of the Marton Men's Hockey club have been included in the Country team to play Town for the Barrett Shield at Feild.ng tomorrow at 2.30 p.m. This will be the final match of the season.

The Country team is: Ron Huddleston, H. Hayden, S. Travena, Ray Huddleston, W. Reid, T. Reiu (Makino), R. Moffett, B. Searancke, N. Webb, F. Moffett, L. Robinson (Marton). Marton harriers to-morrow will be competing in the annual race from Wangaehu to Wanganui, staged by the Wanganui Harrier Club. Marton runners will leave the Victory Milk Bar at 1 p.m. LUTHERAN FELLOWSHIP AND - OPEN DISCUSSION MEETING. Last Sunday following the evening service, members of the Lutneran Congregation assembled in the schoolroom for their monthly fellowship and open discussion meeting. Tile Pastor, Rev. M. R. R. Heidrich, gave a brier explanation of Several Bible passages by request. A .suggestion was made and approved to devote the evening services to sermons or expositions on request texts. The main discussion topic revolved around the church’s home mission obligations and opportunities. The meting concluded with a general fellowship and supper provided by the ladies. JUNIOR NATIONAL PARTY. Miss Doreen Kimpton has been appointed secretary of the Marton Branch of the Junior National Party, vice Miss Margaret Caithness, who has left Marton to take up nursing. The appointment was made at a meeting ot the branch held this week. Miss Mary Rhodes (Rata) who is at present treasurer of the branch has also been elected assistant secretary. The meeting was addressed by Mr. Gordon Drain, who related some oi his experiences while on a two months' trip through Australia. Following formal business, supper was served. The meeting was presided over by Mr. G. E. Gordon. MARTON’S RAINFALL LAST MONTH. Fifteen days of rain were experienced in Marton last month, totalling 3.49 inches as against 2.85 inches for the same period last year, according to records kept by Mr. K. W. Sanlord, Marton. The average for September taken over a period of 4 years is 3.23 inches. For the nine months of this year 30. 06 inches of rain have fallen, which is over five inches less than the I corresponding per.od for 1946, when I tlie figure was 5.31 inches. The promoters this year were favoured with a sunny day and a record number of entries which totalled over 700 from 08 exhibitors. RAILWAY TENNIS CLUB.

Wasson; auditor, Mr. R. G.rling; committee, Messrs. L. Farr, J. Ponga, Mesdames A. Futcher and R. Girling. MARCHING TEAM WITHDRAWS FROM N.Z. UNION. The Revellers girls’ marching team, which was formed in Marton last year, inis withdrawn from the New Zealand Marching Union and affiliated this year with the Manawavu Marching Association which is affiliated with the New Zealand Marching and Recreational Association. This decision was made al a team meeting recently. Broadway team last, year was a member of the union, but. has io date made no decision on its 1947-48 affiliation. A suggestion lias been made (hat a Rangitikei Marching Association be formed and affiliate with the Welling-

ton Association. It would incorporate teams from Marton, Bulls and Hunterville, but to date, no move has been made in that direction. FURTHER “MISS N.Z.’’ DONATIONS.
