N.Z. LEAGUE SIDE LOSES HALF-BACK

London, Sept. 26. A special correspondent of the Press Association says that when J. Haig, New Zealand Rugby League scrum half, who was Injured in the game against St. Helen’s, had his ankle X-rayed at Leeds infirmary it was found he was suffering from a fracture. Haig will probably not be able to play again during the tour, at least not in England. It is possible he may play in France. The New Zealanders were well received by the crowd, and the gate of £■2500 was a record for the St. Helen’* ground. The “Yorkshire Post’s" correspondent says they did more than was expected of them in their opening match. Th e coach, T. A. McClymont, said: “I was as surprised as anyone at their splendid form. I was prepared to make excuses for them after their long sea voyage if they failed to stay the pace, but excuses were not necessary.” He added that the forwards were going to be a strong force if they could learn to got the ball, but it remained to be .seen whether any of the back’s would develop spectacularly. After the match every member of the tear was presented with a drinking glass engraved with the New Zealand coat of arms. Each will also receive a glass water jug and set of glasses. The English Rugby Union has refused to allow the New Zealand League team to use Ilkley Rugby Union ground for practice. Commenting on this decision, Mr. <T. Redwood, one of the joint managers of the team, said: “I dont’ think this can represent the wishes of the majority of Rugby Union players. We have the same trouble in New Zealand. It is unfortunate, but I suppose it cannot be helped." Commenting on the New Zealand League side, Mr. W. Crockford, chairman of the Rugby League council, said: “They are as keen a§ mustard and as likely looking a lot of lads as I have seen. They are heart and soul on the tour, and I am sure the Yorkshire crowds will take to them at once."
