HUNTERVILLE NEWS

MAGAZINES 80 YEARS OLD (0.C.) Hunterville, Sept. 25. Bound volumes of well-known English magazines, dating from 1862 to the turn of the century, which have been on the shelves of the Hunterville Club and of latter years have served no good purpose, have been forwarded to the Alexander Turnbull Library, Wellington. The volumes include the ‘‘lllustrated London News," “Queen," “Gentlewomen," "Graphic,” and “Harpurs.’ All these magazines are still published today, but a comparison between present-day numbers and those of 70 and 80 years reveal big developments, not only in the printers art. but in the general lay-out. In size the magavines were bigger then than they are today but carried very few illustrations, with the exception of fashion plates. As can well be imagined, the latter were in striking—almost humorous—contrast to the modern trend in feminine attire. The question which still requires some elucidation is why such popular women’s magazines should have graced the shelves of a gentlemen’s club! CHURCH X>F ENGLAND.
