DEATH OF MR. S. BEBAN

ONE OF TAIHAPE’S FIRST COUNCILLORS. (0.C.) Tftihape, Aug. 4. The death occurred in Wellington recently ot Mr. Stepaen Beoan, aged 76 years. For more "•than 4U years Mr.' Beban hau ben associated with Taihape and district, and was a member ot the first Taihape Borough Council which was established in 19u6. The personnel of the first council comprised Messrs. A. Nathan (Mayor), A. James, J. Sinclair, A. W. Smith, S. Beban, V\ McCormick, W. McLennan, and A. Ellis. For a long period Mr. Beban was senior councillor. Interested in all forms of sport he took a particularly keen interest in Rugby football and was a former member of the Taihape Rugby Subunion.

For a short period Mr. Beban was associated with the Main Trunk Railway project, put later went into business in Taihape, first as a grocer and later as a tobacconist.

His wife predeceased him some years ago. He is survived by an adult family of two sons and four daughters. One of the sons just recenth’ returned from Canada after an absence of 25 years.

The interment took place at Tait a cemetery, Wellington. WEATHER STATISTICS.

According to statistics supplied by Mr. A. K. Fannin, the total rainfall in Taihape last month was 2.04jn., rain falling on 14 days. This compares with 1.41 in. recorded in July of last year, when rain was registered on 16 days. The total rainfall for the seven months of the present year is 24.60 in., as against 17.87 in. for the same period in 1946. The mean maximum temperature in the shade for July this year was 49.1 degrees. For the same month in 1946 it was 49.9 degrees. The mean minitnuni was 36.8 degrees, compared with 39.9 for July last year. NATIONAL PARK VISIT.
