Dunnage Dispute Referred to National Executive

Wellington, Aug. 5. Members of the national executive of the New Zealand Waterside Workers' Union assembled in Wellington yesterday for a special meeting, at which the principal topic for discussion is the waterfront trouble in Auckland. The meeting may take two days. The national president (Mr. H. Barnes) said he was not prepared to comment on the possibility of an extension of the dispute to other port’s, or on a Government contention that the union had broken a written undertaking, thus leading to the post*bility of prosecution. His attitude was that, the question was now in the hands of the national executive, which was likely to consider also the negotiations with the Government about union representation in the contivl of the waterfront industry. After the discussions an announcement about the outcome was possible. Mr Barnes intends to visit the South Island before returning to Auckland next Tuesday. (P.A.) Auckland. Aug. 5

A conference of organisations directly concerned with the Auckland waterfront will be convened by lhe Auckland Harbour Board as soon as possible to seek to overcome port congestion by improving and facilitating the loading and discharge of ships and the handling of cargo on the city wharves.

This was decided by the harbour board on notice of Mr. Harvey Turner, who urged that the board should take a lead in the matter.
