GAS FLOODS MANY SYDNEY HOUSES
OCCUPANTS HAD TO GET OUT (N.Z.P.A.— Reuter— Copyright ) Recd. 7.55 p.m. Sydney, Aug. 5 Gasping men, women and children fled from their homes to-day when pungent gas flooded a block of 30 houses in the suburb of Flemington.
With eyes smarting, and throats and lungs sore, they had to remain out of the area for two hours until rhe wind dispersed the gas. r It is believed that the gas, which escaped from a steel cylinder, was of a type used in refrigeration. A resident released it Inadvertently. He thought the cylinder was empty and was working on it with the idea ot converting it into an air compressor. When he unscrewed a valve he heard a hitting noise, and, gasping tor breath, he carried his two children to safety, and warned neighbours. Donning a respirator, he made several attempts to turn off the gas, and finally succeeded. Birds in a large aviary nearby were found lying on the bottom of the cage, but, as with people affected by the fumes they soon recovered on exposure to the fresh air.
