SOCIAL AND PERSONAL. Mrs. A. Weeds and Miss Weeds, of Dannevirke, and Mrs. Ferrick, of Ti Tree Point, are the guests of Mrs. J. Duffy, Aramoho. Mrs. W. J. Cooper, president of the Wanganui District Federation of Women's Institutes and Mrs H. Tipper, W.I. voluntary organiser, left yesterday for Wellington to attend a council meeting of the Dominion Federation of Women's Institutes.
Miss Daughne Kelpe, daughter of Mrs. W. J. Kelpe, Bell Street, who has completed her training at the Christchurch Hospital, has passed her State final examination, gaining honours in nursing.
Lieut-Colonel Jean Begg, 0.8. E., Director-General of the Y.W.C.A. Welfare Services in the Far East is at present staying at Government House as the guest of Sir Bernard and Lady Freyberg. This week she will visit her brother, Mr. A. J. Begg, of the Boys' High School, Palmerston North.
Miss S. Lusk, nursing advisor to the Dominion Council of the Plunket Society, and Miss K. Rapp, Dominion secretary, both of Dunedin, visited Wanganui at the week-end. To give pres.dents and secretaries of subbranches an opportunity to meet the visitors, Mrs. T. Hine, president of the Wanganui Plunket Society gave an afternoon tea at her home in Victoria Avenue on Saturday. Leaving by the Rangitiki this week will be Miss Geraldine Le May, who came to New Zealand about six months ago to take up the position of assistant librarian at the United States Information Library, Wellington. She is returning to America. The library is now closed and the director, Miss Mary Parsons, intends to spend some time in the Dominion before returning to the United States. The provincial conference of the Plunket Society is to be held at Palmerston North to-morrow and will be presided over bv the Dominion president, Mrs. J. Begg, of Dunedin. Wanganui delegates who will attend are Mrs. T. Hine, Mrs. H. C. Jenkins, Mrs. A. Tasker (St. John’s Hill) and Mrs. F. D. Deacon, the latter taking the place of Mrs. Carew, who is unable to attend. Delegates and visitors from Taihape, Taranaki and other districts will also attend. The retirement from active duties of Chief Commander V E. Jowett, 0.8. E. (N.Z. W.A.A.C.), has been announced. Prior to her appointment to the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps, Mrs. Jowett was a member of the Dominion executive of the Women's War Service Auxiliary from the time of its formation. Mrs. Jowett was for several years the president of the Wellington branch of the Plunket Society, and was also a member of the Dominion executive of the society.
N.Z. Girls’ Hospital Post In China. Miss Betty White, first assistant dispenser at the Wellington Public Hospital, has just left New Zealand to take up the position of head pharmacist at the Kwang-chi Church Missionarc Society Hospital at Hangchow, China Before the Japanese occupation this institution was the biggest mission hospital in the world. Miss White who is the daughter of the Rev. E. R. and Mrs. White, ot Featherston, is being sent to China by the N.Z. relief agency Corso. She is 26 years of age. As well as head dispenser she will take part in the training work of the hospital.
N.Z. Girl Musician. Those in Wanganui who had the privilege of attending the recitals given in schools by Miss Doris Veale, of Hawera, before she left to further her musical studies in England will be interested to learn that in her first year at the Royal Academy of Music she passed five examinations. As well as the usual studies at the Academy Miss Veale applied for permission to to take 'cello and singing. This talented girl passed the Bronze Medal examinations in three studies and also in aural tests and harmony. She lias made great progress with her pianoforte work and was selected for the honour of playing a pianoforte concerto with the second orchestra of the Royal Academy of Music and at a public end -of-year concert.
