FARMERS’ REMITS ON LAND MATTERS
INCOME FROM SALES TO EX-SERVICEMEN (P.A.) Wellington, Aug. 1 ’lncome received from the investment of money gained from the sale of land to ex-servicemen should be treated as earned income,” stated a remit passed by the Dominion Conference of Federated Farmers. Explaining the remit, Mr. E. J. Harding, the mover, said elderly farmers were finding it unprofitable to sell their land, because to achieve in their retirement income comparable to the social security allowance, would require an investment of £14,500. biot many of them held that much, and so they stayed on their farms. If the profits from the investment of money from the sale of their farms to exservicemen were treated as earned income, many more farms would become available for returned men, as more farmers would sell. The conference further agreed that farmers wishing to sell their land should be given priority for State houses on the necessary permit to secure other suitable living accommoda- ■ Another remit stated that immediate settlement of blocks of land m an improved, unimproved, or partly unproved state should be allowed.
