POSTMEN’S DRIVE FOR CHINA TO-DAY

WANGANUI QUOTA IS £lOOO IN CASH

"Best wishes, appeal and thanks to al! helpers," stated a telegram received yesterday by M.ss E. Brown, Wanganui secretary of C.0.R.5.0., from the Dominion Headquarters ol that body. This communication was with reference to tlie postmen’s drive to tike place this morning to raise funds towards Wanganui’s quota of £lOOO to send relief teams and mater.als into China, part of the task which has been allocated to Britain in restoring the war-torn world. CHINESE FLOODS WORSE. The Rev. Wing-Ngok Cheung, Chinese missioner in Wellington, who recently addressed various aud.ences in Wanganui regarding the plight oi China, has also written to Miss Brow;, wishing the drive all the success it deserves. "I.hope the postmen's drive will prove to be a success," he lias written. "The flood in Kwantung K ot much worse and two million people are homeless. I have just received that news from China. The Chinese people are doing their best to help." This morning's drive, which will be led by postmen of the city, will be bucked by teams of pupils frm the V, anganui Secondary Sehoois—Collegiate, Technical College, St. Augusttine's, Girls' College and Sacred Heart Convent. Equipped with whistles, the members of eacn team will certainly let everybody in the city know that they are on a collecting mission. It is hoped that £lOOO will be raised by this means to hein an old ally of Britain, an ally which has particular appeal to New Zealand, because had the Japanese not had to worry about China in the recent war. the menace of Nippon, it is’believed, would have extended much farther south than it did, and, in all probability, would have encompassed New Zealand. TEAM OF 22 WORKERS FOR CHINA. The fund is being raised to send a New Zealand team of 22 workers into China, which will assist in the reestablishment of hospitals in that country, and work being directed by Rewi Alley in establishing village co-operatives. Members of the teams will receive an army private’s pay during their term of serv'-c. To maintain the team New Zc I id is being asked to raise at least -20,000. Invercargill recently raised more than £2OOO, and Wanganui is being asked to find £lOOO. DRIVE IN MARTON TO-DAY. A similar drive is being made in Marton by postmen this morning. BoyScouts and members of Bible Class teams will assist the postmen in the Marton Area.
