MORE RURAL HOUSES
FARMERS TO WAIT ON THE GOVERNMENT (P.A.) Wellington. Aug. 1. Claims for more rura Ihousing were put forward at a conference ot the New Zealand Federated Farmers today. Mr. M. J. Galloway, of Otaki, said although 9643 houses had been built in New Zealand during the past 12 months, only 120 had been built on farms. He outlined a scheme for the building of State rental houses in villages adjoining farms. Federated Farmers would take the responsibility for paying the rent and rural workers occupying ihe houses would he guaranteed work for 52 weeks a year. They would be available for work on various farms in the district, and also in the case of farmers’ sickness. Farmers asked for priority for the erection of 1000 houses during the next 12 months. They suggested mass production of a type that could have rooms added. If such houses were available they would get married labour.
A deputation will put the farmers’ ease to ihe Prime Minister, probably next week.
