FALSE STATEMENT GIVEN POLICE

SEQUEL HEARD IN COURT O.C. ~ Taihape, July 31. A fine ol £3 was imposed upon Bertram Dick Moore, in the Tainape Magistrate's Court, by Mr. A. Coleman, S.M. for making a false’statement to the police that a crime had been committed, to wit that he hau been knocked down by a motor car, the driver of which failed to stop ana render assistance as required by law. Constable Phillips said Moore had been found lying alongside-a car parked near White’s buildings, in Hautapu Street, and alleged that he had been knocked down, and that the driver ol the car had tailed to stop. Moore was taken to the hospital and when questioned held to his story saia the constable. Gladwynne M. Transom, ot Ohutu, the alleged driver ot the car concerned in the incident when approached denied all knowledge of the happening, as he was not in his car at the time the accident was supposed to have occured, said the witness. Constable Phillips added that when further pressed, Moore admitted his whole story was a fabr/cation and there was no truth in it.

In convicting and fining Moore, the Magistrate pointed out the serious consequences of his foolishness, and the trouble and expense that might have fallen to the lot of an innocent citizen. He would take into account that Moore was only 19 and married. MISCELLANEOUS CASES

For supplying liquor to a native for consumption off licensed premises cost Wine Kara £7 and costs. Having liquor in his possession intended for consumption in a railway carriage cost Jack Leslie £5 and costs. For using insulting language in a public place, Douglas Buchanan was lined 12 10s and costs. Dennis Peter Garlick for using obscene language was fined £5 and costs. The following were fined 13 and costs for having liquor under their control in the vicinity of a dance hall; Oliver Collins, Frederick Howard, Clarance Weller, Roy McKay, and R. Thurston.

Having liquor in their possesion in the vicinity of a dance hall cost Frederick Albert, and Donald Hunter, 13 and costs.
