COLLEGIATE SCHOOL NARROWLY DEFEATED BY NEW PLYMOUTH B.H.S.

Showing distinctly improved form in their back play yesterday afternoon, Wauganui Collegiate School’s first fifteen held the first fifteen of the New Plymouth Soys’ High School to a one-point margin. New Plymouth won by nine points to eight, scoring one unconverted try and two pealties to Wanganui’s converted try and penalty. The game was fast and open, and many scintillating back moves were seen Collegiate showed a vast improvement on last week’s match against Palmerston North, and the handling of the backs and their deeper penetrating runs nearly won them the game. The tackling by each side was good and neither side lacked in this department. Both sets of forwards played hard games and the rucking play was extremely good. The packs had plenty of speed and frequently indulged in fast passing rushes and backing-up moves. New Plymouth held a slight advantage during most of the match and kept Collegiate on the defensive.

The most outstanding player on the field was Reid, the New Plymouth half-back. He was a potential danger to his opponents every time he handled the ball, and several brilliant moves resulted from his exceptional play. He had a really Elusive dodge and the manner in which he broke through time and again around the side of the scrum would have done credit to any senior half. He possessed what very few footballers have, and that is “football sense.” His passes, although a little wild at times, were always taken cleanly. Broughton, Bathgate and Novak also played good games in the New Plymouth back line. Carmichael, centre hooker, and Hooper, breakaway, excelled in the New Plymouth pack. For Collegiate, Roisterer again played a sound game at full-back, and proved his ability to find touch with either fool. The inside backs also played well and their passing was sound. The only fault in the back line was the tendency to stand too shallow when on attack. Wilson, the Collegiate hooker, played a great forward game and was always to the forefront in the rushes. Within the first 15 minutes Collegiate scored. The Wanganui forwards took the ball to the New Plymouth line in a series of rushes, and after a lot of scrambling play on the line, Beamish dived over on the ball 10 yards from the corner flag. Hanna converted.—Wanganui Collegiate 5, New Plymouth 0. Soon after New Plymouth were awarded a penalty about 15 yards outsite the Collegiate twenty-five and in front of the posts. Broughton converted with an excellent kick against a cross wind—Wanganui Collegiate 5, New Plymouth 3. Two minutes later New Plymouth went to the lead, when, from a scrum, Reid dodged around the side, sold a dummy and passed on to Novak, who scored eight yards from the posts. Broughton’s kick failed.—New Plymouth 6, Wanganui Collegiate 5, Soon after Collegiate again took the lead, when Hanna converted a penalty from 10 yards outside the twenty-five and directly in front. —Wanganui Collegiate 8, New’Plymouth 6. The score remained the same until after halftime.

On the resumption of play, both sides settled down to hard football. Reid again started a passing rush, and aided by Broughton, who had come up from full-back to make an extra liteeighth, the New Plymouth backs came very close to scoring. A penalty was awarded New Plymouth and Broughton was successful with the kick taken from one yard inside the twenty-five. —New Plymouth 9, Wanganui Collegiate 8. The teams were;
