Can Living Standards in N.Z. Rightly be Called High?

The value of New Zealand’s high standard of living was challenged by Mrs. Ashford Harris, a member of the Dominion Council of the Plunket Society, at the annual meeting of the Masterion Plunket Society held last week.

Mrs. Harris, who is president of the Wellington Housewives Association, slated that the living standard could not rightly be called high when £lO,500,000 a year was spent on racing, £5,500,000 on beer and only £5,250,000 on education. She said that we could not rightly claim a high standard of living till the standard of home life was raised. The speaker added that to do this parenthood should be taught as well as mothercraft.
