The presentation of the Distinguished Service Cross to Harold Simmonds, formerly chief engineer ot thc Awatea. was made by the GovernorGeneral at Government House yesterday afternoon.

Last evening Lady Freyberg, attended by Miss Rosemary Eley, was present at the opening of the annual Dominion conference of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers of New Zealand at thc Town Hall, Wellington.

Mi. J. C. Batt has been appointed as the Wanganui Education Board's representative or. the Wanganui Girls' College Board of Governors.

Mr. Arthur Hirst, a noted lecturer on music, is expected to give lectures in the Wanganui Education Board's district shortly.

Messrs J. C. Batt and I. W. Mudlord will represent the Wanganui Education Board at the annual conference of the Technical Education Association in Wellington on September 24 and 25.

Mr. Cyril G. C. Dermer, prominent in the field of Jersey cattle breeding, died yesterday suddenly at his home at Cheltenham at the age of 68. He was a pxst president of the Jersey Breeders' Association and past chairman of the Manawatu-Oroua Power Board.

Major F. J. Ney, M.C., who is visiting New Zealand in connection with organisation of the Empire Youth Movement, has been for several weeks in a Wellington hospital. At the end of this week Major Ney will leave Wellington for Napier, where he will be convalescing.

Jonkeer Dr. W. E. van Panhuys, former Consul-General for the Netherlands, who acted as Charge d’Affaires at the Legation until the arrival of the Minister (Dr. van Troostenburg de Bruyn), will leave Wellington next week for Auckland en route to Holland. Dr. van Panhuys will leave by plane on July 19 for Java, where he will stay a short time before proceeding to Holland. Mrs. van Panhuys will leave for Europe by the Rangitiki early in August.
