WATERSIDE WORK HAS ITS SPECIAL PSYCHOLOGY .
J (P.A.) Parliament Bldgs. July 2. • An appeal for the closest co-opera- ■ tion between workers and farmers ■ was made by the Hon. ,J. Roberts : (Wellington), in moving the Address • in Reply in the Legislative Council to- ' day. Mr. Roberts said that all sec- [ lions of the community employed in ' th ( . production of goods and services should have a voice in the manage1 ment of industry. Mr. Roberts said that, propaganda had been carried out by political and economic interests to create a division between the workers and the farmers. The appointment, of a Dairy Industry Commission was a progressive wtep |which would tend toward co-operation between th e farmer and the Governi ment. Money which the farmer rejeeived was his wage and he was en-‘ J - titled to a say in the management of 5 his industry. ’ Speaking of waterside workers, Mr. ‘ Roberts said that if there were less press talk, less drawing of attention to the few who step over the mark, then with an honest and decent leadership, ’ these men would give grand service to • New Zealand. Mr. Roberts said he r had been associated with the waterside workers-since the wrecking of ’ the 1913 strike. The people needed to 1 understand the psychology of waterfront labour before they could understand the men themselves. “Ono side is as blameworthy as the other in this matter, said Mr. Roberts. “I can take Councillors to any port in New Zealand to see the greatest co-operation in the history of New Zealand in the loading and discharging of ships.’ Mr. • Roberts said there had been disputes .in Auckland and Wellington but th? great majority of the men were v.’ill- ' ing to give good sendee. “A lot of the , trouble arises from pin-pricking the men unnecessarily.’’ he said.
