BELLONA ABSENTEES NOT YET CLASSED AS DESERTERS

(P.A.) Auckland, May 7. Although all absent rating from the cruiser Bellona have exceeded their leave by more than a week no steps have been taken to issue warrants lor their apprehension. One further man retimed to the ship to-day, leaving 48 who refuse to resume duty until they receive a reply to grievances which they forwarded to their commanding officer for transmission to the Naval Board. All absentees are now liable to be classed as deserters and the Minister of Defence, Mr. Jones, stated last week that action would be taken against them in that event. The warrants would be executed by civil police although absentees when apprehended are normally returned to the Naval authorities.
