OBSERVATORY REPORT

Wellington, May 6. The Dominion Observatory places the centre of yesterday’s earthquake some 200 miles away from Wellington, the approximate distance the Wahine was away when the wave struck. “Unquestionably earthquakes cause tidal waves,” said an observatory official to-day, and instanced the huge wave which struck the coast near Gisborne in March, causing extensive damage between Tatapouri and Whangara. On that occasion the centre of the earthquake was placed 30 miles from the coast.
