OFFICIAL WARNING IN AUSTRALIA TO EXPECT RISING PRICES

Recd. 8.15 p.m. Canberra, May G. Housewives were warned officially to-day to prepare themselves against the shock of price rises in the near future. The rise in price range is expected over 500 articles if the Government does not continue the present subsidies or attempt to offset by subsidy the increased cosis of importing and manufacturing. The Government has expressed itself against the continuance of subsidies, and official spokesmen have hinted at their withdrawal. The main items affected if this happens will be tea, jute, potatoes and phosphates. The landed cost of tea has increased, and the present subsidy is insufficient to maintain the current retail price. A rise in the cost of phosphates would be important because of its relation to costs in the primary producing industries. Dearer phosphates would mean a general rise in food prices.
