CRICKET TOUR OF AUSTRALIA
HAMMOND TWICE OBJECTED TO TWO TEST UMPIRES Recd. 8.15 p.m. London, May 6. Hammond’s report to the M.C.C. on the Australian tour discloses that he twice objected to the reappointment of Scott and Berwick as umpires, and that his protests received little consideration, says the “Daily Herald” cricket writer, Charles Bray. Hammond’s objections were overruled, firstly because he submitted insufficient evidence, and secondly because, in the opinion of the Board of Control, Scott and Berwick were the only two umpires good enough for the Tests. Hammond maintains that there were two others as good, if not better. To avoid the embarrassment of a visiting captain having to make specific charges against an umpire, he urges that as, in England, the names of five or six umpires should be submitted and the two captains left to agree on two.
