HOME-MADE RADIO TO ENTERTAIN SCOUTS BOUND FOR JAMBOREE
Envy of many of the 264 New Zealand Scouts en route to the sixth world jamboree to be held at Moisson, near Paris, will be one from Wanganui who had the foresight to build himself a portable radio for the trip. He is Senior Air Scout (King’s Scout) W. J. Main, of Aotea Troop, Gonville. The radio is unusually small, measuring only eight inches, by four by 3'l, and is of very light weight. Considering its size the reception is outstanding, all New Zealand and many Australian stations coming as clearly as if it were a full sized cabinet machine. Batteries used are an ordinary torch battery and one from a hearing aid outfit. Deciding that a portable radio would be a handy possession for an ocean trip, Scout Main secured the materials and did the whole job himself. including the cabinet. All Scouts attending the jamboree are now assembled in Wellington. Some of the Wanganui Scout County representatives left here on Monday, and the remainder followed yesterday. To-day the Scouts will hold a street parade, will be farewelled by the Prime Minister, and then embark aboard the Rangitata and the start of the great adventure.
