GONVILLE CROQUET CLUB THE SEASON CLOSES. The Gonville Croquet Club held its closing function recently when members of other clubs and friends were present and took part in the various competitions and games. Afternoontea was served in the pavilion. Mrs. Stewart presented sprays to the officials of the club. The president, Mrs. C. J. McLean, thanked all who assisted towards the pleasure of the afternoon. Mrs. Allan spoke for the visitors. Trophies were presented by the president as follows: A level, Mrs. Fisher 1, Mrs. R. Stewart 1, Mrs. McCallum runner-up; C level, Mrs. Hampton 1, Mrs. Ahern runner-up; A Yankee, Mrs. Beattie 1, Mrs. Fisher runner-up; B Yankee, Mrs. McCallum 1, Mrs. Stewart run-ner-up; C Yankee, Mrs, Hampton 1, Mrs. Ahern runner-up; club handicap A, Mis. Fisher; B, Mrs. McCallum; C. Mrs. Hampton. NATIONAL PARTY WANGANUI W. MEN'S SECTION ANNUAL. MEETING. The annual meeting of the Women's Section of the Wanganui branch of the National Party was held in Dustin's Rooms recently. In the absence of the president, Mrs. A. H. McLean was m the chair, and Mrs. J. N. Lorimer acted as secretary in the absence of Miss Matthews. The annual report outlined the activities of the women’s section during the year. These included card parties, musical functions, the Women's Rally at the Opera House where Mrs. Hilda Ross, M.P., was the speaker. The women s section also gave active support to C.0.R.5.0., the Town and Country Residential Nursery Committee and the Health §tamp Campaign. Sincere appreciation was expressed of the work of Miss B. Matthews who has been honorary secretary and treasurer for many years. She wishes to be relieved of the position. Tlte following were elected: President, Miss E. Newton; secretarytreasurer, Mrs. Dalgety; committee, Mesdames W. E. Robbie, A. E. Halligan, A. H. E. Wall, T. Hine, C. S. Ryan, W. Glasgow, A. Wilson, A. H. Mac Lean, Dalgety, H. C. Jenkins, H. D. Robertson, E. Kirk, Bayly, T. Hackshaw, F. J. H. Nancarrow, Abraham, Mercer, Broad, Scott, Chesswas, Takarangi, C. Roddy, Paul, Merewether, Lorimer, A. H. Collins, Robinson, Clark, J. G. Robinson, Hoult, A. Duncan, Bishop, Misses Polson, Hine, Fraser and W. Anderson. The guest speaker was Mr. W. A. Sheat, M.P.. He traced the re-action of the shortages that continue to hinder industry and the failure of the Government to overcome the many hardships of the housewife and the family in general. Mrs. Hine moved a vote of thanks to the speaker. Afternoon tea was served and the meeting closed with the National Anthem. STREET DAY HELPERS ENTERTAINED Friends and helpers who assisted with the annual .street day appeal held recently for the Home of Compassion, Wanganui, were entertained at a social afternoon on Saturday by the Sisters, at the home in Guyton Street. Despite the rain there was a good attendance and all spent a very happy time listening to instrumental and vocal item' Father M. J. Burke. Parish Priest, was presented with the cheque, and on behalf of the Sisters thanked all the people of Wanganui for their kindness, and added that they could always depend on Wanganui folk for help. The Mayor, the Hon. W. J. Rogers, M.L.C., also spoke and endorsed the remarks of Father Burke and also praised the work being done by the Sisters. Following the items, which were announced by Mr. Feeney, afternoon tea was served.
